Nearly a year after it announced its bid to go public, Facebook is confronting the ultimate burden of the information age: how to help its users find what they are looking for amid the billions of pictures, “likes” and status updates they post every day.

The next frontier that Facebook needs to conquer, analysts say, is search. That would help it significantly expand revenues and, in turn, its market value. “Search, I would say, is a very high priority for Facebook,” Colin Sebastian, an analyst for Robert W. Baird & Company said. “Facebook has this incredible treasure trove of unstructured data on the site.”

    From my understanding, noisy data is data people get from friends “likes” and both personal and commercial advertisements/sponsors found on Facebook. If Facebook decides to create a search engine/tool and drowning out the noisy data, they could be extremely successful. As the article suggests, people will be able to use the search engine in order to find both; things they are looking for that are personally tailored to them, as well as getting suggestions from the search engine that friends on your friends list have recently searched for or recommended.
    I believe Facebook will be successful in the search advertising model as I mentioned previously, however, I do not believe their revenues would be comparable to bing or google.
    Google is dedicated to vast searches with many answers and links to other websites not to mention the millions they make on advertisements. Facebook’s aforementioned search device would be a limited search engine as stated in the article, and therefore they would never be able to match or get close to google’s revenues.

    As we all know that facebook is the largest growing social network in the world, it is obvious that with a search function it will be way more successful than google. Nowadays everyone has facebook, that is where everyone chat, meet new people, and get in hold with family and friends. So many people are addicted to facebook. when one updates his/ her own status all the friends get to know of whats happening right away. People respond quickly to this social network unlike google. Personally I dont even remember once going on google to search for whats happening around the world. All i do on google is search for stuff that i want to know at that moment in time. But with facebook I check atleast twice in an hour.Facebook can be a good source of communication but it can be used for bad reasons. Some people post their personal information which is not safe and that kind of information attract stalkers and hackers. In the business environment you can not use facebook but you can use google. I believe facebook with a search function can become successful.

    First of, Facebook has lots of people who sign up almost everyday. It has billions of users who interact with each other irrespective of geography, time, language , origin and place. A lot of teenagers and even adults spend more than half of their time on Facebook chatting, updating statuses, commenting, updating profiles and many father things. People post practically everything they do or hear on Facebook for their friends to see, like or comment, therefore there is too much information flowing on Facebook.
    As the Article mentioned, Facebook has a lot of noisy data. People share their personal information without thinking of the harm it may cause. Many of the information on Facebook are irrelevant.

    Facebook search option has been improving though out the years. Compared to google, Facebook is doing a fairly god job. It may not be as successful as google because the main focus or area for google is to search. Unlik google, facebook’s promary purpose is for interaction with friends and family. A reasonable revenue will be generated from the search advertising model because people use Facebook frequently and people get information from there. Post, comments, likes all help in promoting or advertising a website or a store or any other thing.
    I think Facebook should continue to improve their web search advertising model. A lot of companies/ stores/ universities now have a Facebook account because they know they can get popularised by posting things on Facebook for people to see. Information can be shared through this miduim of interaction.

    Noisy data is unuseful data, sometimes corrupted data or that is meaningless. Facebook has alot of this as millions upon millions of peoples conversations and posts about meaningless irrelevent information would create a challenge to be able to sift through effectivly and effciently. The oportunity for facebook is that of they are able to develop an effective way to navigate and cultivate the vast amount of data located on facebook. I think this would be extremly useful, as I love to go to movies and I could search for what people thought about movies that I had a desire to go see. Or restauraunts in a particular area or for a good price. It could further be used as a tool for recreational pursuits as you could search for where people have vacationed camped and even what hotels to stay at. The use of this search idea is limitless for facebook users. I believe that it could significantly steal market share and users away from google. However there is still a large amount of the older generation who do not use facebook and would prefer to use google. Also I think an issue to raise is would you as a facebook user want others searching through your personal information and happenings in your life? I think you would need to set restrictions on your privacy settings. I think this contributes to the point that ones privacy is slowly being elimanted as technology advances. I still believe that google, while it may loose money to facebook and users, it will still be a major technological staple in providing quick access of information accross the world. This is also a huge opportunity for facebook to expand its horizens and reputation beyond just being the largest social networking site.

    The idea of Facebook implementing a search engine on it’s site is certainly an interesting idea. I think this concept would be very complementary to the website itself. As most users use this service for entertainment or pass time purposes, creating a search engine for the website that would enable users to enhance that experience would be a good move. For example, if you see a friend’s post that said, “ZOMG! Can’t wait to see Pitch Perfect tonight!” and wondered what’s that? If you had the ability to search what Pitch Perfect was through one click within the same website that generated reliable and informative results, it could be a very widely used service.

    However, although it could be a very convenient service, it might not be as widely used since many people are dedicated to search engines such as Google. If you’re doing serious research, chances are you won’t be using a social-networking website such as Facebook to do it. Many workplaces frown upon the use of Facebook during work as well, therefore, the search engine will most likely be used purely for recreational or convenience purposes. The credibility and reputation of this potential search engine will simply have to reflect the notion of the the website itself (i.e. just for fun or curiosity).

    I do believe that Facebook will be successful in this search model. Like the article stated, they have hired over 100 people to work on this search function. However, I think it will be successful, but it could never compare to Google’s revenue. From what I understood from this article, Facebook will only focus their search on what your friends like, such as when it comes to movies and places to eat. That is much better than random people making reviews if you were to just search in Google, which there could be many fake reviews where people are just trying to be funny. I don’t think that this Facebook search would be beneficial when it comes to trying to search for information about something. If you were trying to learn something new about anything, you just type it in Google and it displays thousands of websites with the top websites coming out first. Facebook states that it will just answer your question right away, which doesn’t give you the opportunity to compare other websites. I do believe that if Facebook uses a search function, it will be great and many people will switch search functions, but it can never compete with Google, as it is used much more to find any information you want.

    I believe that the “noisy” data reference in the article refers to the fact that Facebook has a ton of informative data but at the same time, there is a ton of useless data. It would take a lot of work to sift through the information which would be deemed useful and allow it to be accessible to users. They have the competitive advantage over Google in the sense that there information would be updated nearly instantaneously if there was a way to sift the useful data making it therefore less “noisy”.
    People in this generation and for generations prior tend to follow the current trends and if Facebook was to be able to create a search engine that allowed people to see which movies everyone was going to or which books everyone was reading, they would be successful in generating more profits due to the fact that there would be a higher volume of users on the site and those that already use it frequently would then shift some of the time they spend on Google over to Facebook which would result in more advertising profits.
    Overall, I believe this search engine concept would be in Facebook’s favour if there is a way for them to calm down the “noisy” data.

    Being a dedicated Facebook user the term “noisy data” was one that I immediately understood. Noisy data is referring to the extensive amounts and unorganized information on the site. Each hour bring more information floods in that is just left there cluttering up people’s pages until there are so many new likes, pictures, and posts that the old information is replaced and impossible to find. This ‘Facebook search’ could be a great opportunity for Facebook if implemented right.
    The article is suggesting that Facebook could take all the data it’s users upload and categorize it. It will make searching for specifics on the site way more efficient and effective. I have tried numerous times to find a specific post a friend has made and gave up dissapointed, this search engine will allow it’s users to sort through information and find things imediately. The ‘noisy data’ mentioned will be sorted out and properly used.
    I believe this is an excellent opportunity. As it is there are large amounts of people buying ad space on Facebook just because it is such a popular social media site. This is the perfect opportunity for businesses to profit off the personal information users put out on facebook. Businesses can target what users want and what their friends want and promote that to those users. I can search what my friends say about movies, see if they like it or not, and decide to go see it based on this. If Facebook actually follows through with this search it is a guarantee profit for them. Businesses everywhere will be desperate to be apart of it. This is backed up by the article when it mentions how quickly stock prices rose just because this idea was mentioned.

    I don’t believe that a “search functionality” can help Facebook to make a lot of profit. First of all, I don’t think that it can find a lot of relevant information for the users of the website. Actually, if I have the opportunity to search information through this kind of functionality, I don’t know which kind of research I will make (excepted usual researches which are already available for years). In addition, as user of this website, I never had felt the need of this application before its introduction and no one of my friends seems to want it.

    In another hand, Facebook earns the majority of its money thanks to adds which are posted on the website. If a company decide to pay Facebook to show some adds to potential consumers, it’s because Facebook can target the right consumers (thanks to its database) among one billion people. If Facebook want to increase its revenue, the company has two possibilities. First increase the numbers of users (it’s seems quite hard) or increase the variety of adds available for the advertisers (for example videos,…).

    Google and Facebook are competitors because they are both internet platforms. They earn money with adds so they have a similar business model but they don’t attract the users of theirs platforms with the same tools. Google is known to be the most important search engine of Internet and Facebook is the most important social network. I don’t think that Facebook has the obligation to creates a successful “search functionality” to keep all of its users because in my opinion, it’s not something really important for the use of Facebook.

    Facebook has a lot of “noisy data”, which means that there is sometimes too much information to process and comprehend. This makes it difficult to filter out all of the useless information and make use of the important information to use within the Facebook search engine. Facebook definitely has a competitive advantage to an extent. They have the ability to generate information immediately as statuses and other information is added continually. Other search engines do not have the ability to do so in that amount of time.

    With regards to the article, I believe that the Facebook search engine could become very successful with their advertising model. Facebook would gain a large stream of revenue from their massive amount of advertising, but it will not be as effective as the larger search engines, such as Google. Facebook will be cluttered with a lot of random, disorganized advertisements; whereas Google has already established an effective revenue stream from their advertisements. Another fallback for Facebook would be the convenience factor. Google does not require a username and password, which makes it a quick and efficient go-to search engine. Overall, I believe it would be best for Facebook to stick with what they do best: building the largest social network in the world.

    This article is saying that there is a lot of data on Facebook and that that data is noisy – meaning there is a lot of very useless data. There is a lot of this data and it may be very difficult to search through. Because of the magnitude of Facebook and the amount of users it has I believe that if it is more convenient for the users of Facebook that it will be a huge success for the company. When surfing the Internet facebook is usually open in one of my tabs and throughout my random Internet surfing Google searches are usually in the mix. If I am on fb already I think the convenience factor would be a huge competitor to Google. With the mass knowledge within facebook the specified searches could be more relevant to the individual making the searches. The downside to this for consumers would be the increased amount of advertising that everyone one would have to deal with. Facebook is already cluttered with ads that I am always accidentally clicking on. Google has the advantage that they are not always cluttered with ads and that it is a very simple thing anyone can use without a username and password.

    The “noisy data” that is mentioned in the article is the massive amount of unorganized (and mostly useless) data that Facebook stores on its users. At the moment, if you wished to find a post by a friend 3 years ago, it would be tedious and time-consuming to go back and try and find it.

    I think Facebook could be more successful monetizing a search function than continuing to clutter up the newsfeed with advertising. Many people, including myself, are sick enough of the advertising that we would consider leaving Facebook if it gets worse. An unassuming search engine at the top of the page wouldn’t really bother me though. I like the idea that when you search for a product or service, the search engine directs you to where you can it. What i don’t like to see is advertising for products that I did not initiate.

    I think Facebook should eliminate the un-prompted advertising and come out with a comprehensive search engine. They should also consider partnering with Google to develop it. Google has a much bigger market cap, much bigger cash flows, and a much more innovative workforce. I think if Facebook tried to compete with Google, it would be a fight to the death for one of them, and I wouldn’t be betting on Facebook. They’d be much better to partner up and put a more comprehensive Google search engine inside the Facebook platform.

    Reading this article gave me a little hope for Facebook, because in my opinion – coming from someone who doesn’t even use Facebook and is probably unqualified to make such a judgment – they were old news, their public roll-out was a flop, and they looked to be heading the way of the dinosaur, or MySpace. The reason I say this article gives me hope for them is because it has brought to my attention Facebook’s immense potential for expansion, as well as their recognition of such. The article seems to illustrate that Facebook recognizes the ever changing scape of the World Wide Web, and the utter need for continual innovation and expansion. Until they prove to me otherwise, I do not believe that they will be able to compete on the same level as Google. I say this because Google appears to me to have already mastered this idea of advancement and change. They have managed to expand far being just being a search engine, to becoming an engine of innovation itself. Facebook has primarily made its profits by providing a service to marketing firms – both through selling advertising space and information – but this too must evolve to stay profitable. With the next big idea always being around the corner, Facebook has to be the one with that idea, and not fall victim to the rising competition. If they can find a way to maximize their resources and tap that potential, they may be able to prove themselves on the stock tickers.

    The term noisy data was referring to how Facebook has been collecting social data for nearly ten years now. However, the data collected has been unstructured. To find any useful information throughout Facebook, one would have to sift through a significant amount of useless crap. The problem with Facebook is that it almost has too much data. Anyone could post something along the lines of “I vacuumed the floor today.” What use is that data? Here is an ad for a Dyson vacuum. Thanks, but I have a vacuum already, hence my status. Google does a great job at advertising the way it does, because it is subtle. Facebook has colorful ads on every corner of the page, and when that happens, people start ignoring them. A Facebook search engine could be a powerful tool, and could get them an increase in profits. It would extremely hard for Facebook to compete with Google, or even be compared to Google in that respect. Google is already established. If I have a question, the first thing I do is Google it. Granted, the first link I usually click on is Wikipedia, but I do Google it first. Any online shopping? Google it! Look, the first two links are Amazon and Ebay. Google is the dominating force in any online search engine. Bing and Yahoo! are known, but not utilized the same way that Google is. I believe that Facebook should create some sort of search engine, but they should not start by comparing themselves to an internet titan.

Even so, noisy data still has advantage parts and disadvantages. According to the article I have read, I know the definition of noisy engine is meanness information. Even though the noisy data includes much information, it can not provide very clearly and directly information for the certain person or organization. However, based on the lots of users of Facebook, noisy data is the foundation of Facebook’s search engine. Maybe in some time, noisy data could provide the different references for the other uses. We could consider noisy data may not in fact be noisy to everyone else. All in all, the most important part for Facebook is creating a search engine that fit the users’ requirement. In the modern society, science and technology is developing and innovation. If Facebook can create a useful search engine with efficient use its noisy data, it would success in the future also.

    Noisy data refers to an overload of data that is hard to sort through and in some cases useless; however Facebook has social data which will give it a competitive advantage over its competitors (Google). Facebook search site would be very interesting as it would incorporate the user’s social data to find what it thinks they might like. Comparing Facebook to Google would be a stretch as the Facebook search site may not provide the most accurate answers. I think the advertising model would generate revenue but that revenue would not be comparable to the already established Google.

    Noisy data, is defined as data that is meaningless and providing no significant information to a person and/or organization. However, since Facebook has a tremendous amount of data and users, what some would consider noisy data may not in fact be noisy to everyone. Facebook has a unique opportunity to exploit their information to the general public and provide tremendous amount of information/data to each and every Facebook user. Because Google has the majority of the market share, it will be a monumental challenge for Facebook to challenge Google’s capacity. We have seen other search engines appear in the last couple decades that have come nowhere close to what Google has done (ie. Ask jeeves, Bing). Revenues will most likely not reach that of Google. Although Facebook’s platform is unique as opposed to that of Google, in that user’s/friends on Facebook post opinions about favorite movies/books, Google would still dominate this market. For when we want to find movie reviews, we go to Google, and it will redirect us to rotten tomatoes, a website solely based on movie reviews, which may be more ‘credible’ per se than Facebook friends. For this fact alone it will be very hard for Facebook to increase there market share, due to the vast amount of data and credible information that goes past the realms of just Facebook.

    Noisy data was once referred to as corrupt data, but now it includes the definition of meaningless data. I feel that Facebook has a lot of noisy data that makes the user cringe, for instance on any particular Facebook page there is information on the sides of the page that is useless for most users. This noisy data consists of advertising and different apps that can be accessed if the user is interested. I feel that the advertising is like a commercial, it is annoying and pops up automatically whenever the user changes the page. Another aspect of noisy data is when you try to change the page you get routed to another page which you have to close and find your way back to the page you wanted. This is like a cookie built into the page, whereas normal cookies pop up when you access a certain website. I think that if Facebook were to build a search advertising model it would be more useful and users would definitely take advantage of the search engine. Facebook should analyze this and ask users if they prefer this and if they would use it in comparison to what they have now. It would definitely increase advertising and revenues but as for it replacing Google in the future, I think that remains to be seen.

    I believe that Facebook in the coming years will be able to achieve success in the search advertising model. First, they are uniquely positioned to have massive amounts of information that is a virtual treasure trove for targeted advertising. As the article suggested Facebook users routinely gush about everything they like, dislike etc. If Facebook was able to develop a system that can brush aside the noisy data and focus on highly tailored individual information they could easily topple Google as the main search engine on the internet. Google has always had an extremely powerful search platform that can bring the best results for any given search. What Google does not have however is the social media side of the internet where users are far more open about what they want or don’t want. Currently Facebook has no way to sift through the endless abyss of information from its users. As the article eluded to they are obviously trying to capitalize on this massive amount of consumer information so that it can be used in a meaningful way. Bringing on loads of new staff and even search engineers formerly employed with Google, it can only be a matter of time before they achieve this and become a powerful search engine tied to an endless stream of consumer data via social media.

    Facebook has million of users, which has it’s pros and cons. Some cons are noisy data and increase use of social literature. Noisy data can be described as unintelligible or meaningless texts, which include spelling errors and use of abbreviations by the users (LOL, OMG, L8ER, just to abbreviate a few). You would think as we use these sites to organize our thoughts into words it would increase our abilities in grammar and spelling. Sadly, the social literature we use is not because we use too much noisy data within our status updates or tweets. No sentences, no paragraphs, and heaven forbid a capital letter. Facebook has an advantage over instant trends. Facebook can set tracking devices within its framework to find out what words, movie titles, fashion, or any digital footprints are being updated the most. It can gather and sell that information to marketing company or whoever wants to buy it. I believe Facebook has found its niche and should not divert into a search engine model. As a student, I want variety. I want to observe and read different views and opinions. If Facebook rules over search engines, I would have to ask myself about the integrity of the searches; are they based on the highest paid clients and not the most useful, will the gatekeepers want the general public to only have access to certain information or news. I believe there should be a variety of options to choose from and not one main provider. Facebook, you are a social network, not a search engine: unless I am searching for an old high school buddy.

    I believe that noisy data, is saying that there is so much data that it is always flowing at a continual bases. Tons of people use Facebook and put up all kinds of stuff, pretty much anything one can think of. This becomes a massive advantage for Facebook, because they have the access to this information almost immediately as people are up dating their status’s and commenting on others posts. Other search engines do not have access to such information as quickly.
    Yes, I feel that Facebook could become a very successful searcher engine and one day stream revenue comparable to google. Facebook definitely has the data to be able to put something like this together. It will take time for Facebook to be able to produce a search engine as efficient as google but they have to information to be able to pull it off. The only problem that i can see in the matter is if Facebook some how fades out before they are able to make something of it all, because Facebook fades out there goes that information that they are relying on. Right now though with the amount of traffic on Facebook it is certainly possible.

    The recent step taken by Facebook to go public has certainly sparked a lot of conversations , as it is the site where you can share your personal stuff about your daily life .Most of the people believe that facebook has a huge potential if it starts thinking about having a search engine of its own . The reason behind this can be that if facebook embarks a search engine of its own , then it probability of success is quite high that’s because it would not only search according to the words you entered but it would make that search much more personalized .Suppose you want to buy a new car and you enter your choice in google’s search engine as well as in facebook’s search engine .Well the google search engine would give the same result for every person who enters the same text ,but it would not be the same in case of facebook’s search engine , it would show you the results which are more personalized to you ,and for every person it would be showing different results .Those result would depend probably on your lifestyle and your friend’s lifestyle ,which is obviously a better option . Hence the probability of the success of facebook’s search engine is quite high .But to achieve this is not an easy job , if facebook is able to come up with this kind of search engine then probably it would be giving a huge competition to google.

    I think the noisy data, are the data that are gathering and accumulate randomly and do not follow a specific manner or program or plan. Google has much information that is organized base on research engine and help its users to find their information. I think Bill Tai is right. Facebook contains much information about people but most of them are noisy data and may not be useful for research. My point of view is Facebook is a social website that helps people to connect with each other rather a place for research. Facebook social information would help people to answer their own personal question by asking their friends as they can do that with the current Facebook website. I think Facebook also has its member personal information that is data but Facebook needs to consider privacy of its member rather than to think about any profit. Because finally it costs Facebook lot more in illegally using members’ information than the profit from research engine.
    I think Facebook will not be very successful in research as Google does. Facebook hire employees in IT that they hack how Google research engines work, so it means the research engine for Facebook would be the same level as Google or less than that. So Facebook would be a follower of Google technology that would be the same or even less engine for research. The research would not be the advantages for Facebook but may bring some profits and income for Facebook.

    Every facebook account online depicts and displays a personality type. The reason why I think a search engine made by facebook can have an edge over google or others is because facebook has so much personal data that it can create a search engine personalized to every user’s needs. For example, it can find the exact answer to our question or search based on what it thinks we prefer. Like the article said, movies, books and other entertainment related searches can be highly personalized to the user’s needs. Google on the other hand, generalizes everything and provides over thousands of articles for every search topic. The focus needs to shift from quantity to quality information. Facebook might be able to provide the same kind of personal attention that smart phones provide. A “smart” search engine can break the barriers of generalization and intelligently analyze our search key words to provide what we might be looking for by saving time. Though it might be difficult for facebook to make a transition from an entertainment social networking site to a serious search engine where one may find scholarly articles or serious information. It all boils down to how much facebook is ready to put in building the search engine. With the technological advancement today, facebook can really create a marvelously user friendly search engine by integrating many special features that are only unique to it.

    I think Facebook has a great idea with it’s search advertising model, however, I do not think they will be able to create a stream of revenue like Google has. Facebook is not a trusted location for usable information like Google is. Facebook could be a good source for people looking for opinions on a potential movie, or recipes from their friends. But that is already available with Facebook by using a status update to ask. I would much rather Google and movie trailer to see if I like the film, rather than search hundreds Facebook opinions. Also, with the use of Facebook’s privacy settings, people may feel the search is too intrusive and keep their information private, thus, leaving the Facebook search useless. Facebook could, however, sell its searching ability to advertisers, who want to search which people like a certain food, movie, restaurant, etc, and tailer advertisements even more.

    Noisy data is when you have a lot of information that is always flowing into the system which is what Facebook has in turn of updated information about its sites users. This is a massive advantage that Facebook has over other search engines like Google because they will be able to see the most up to date trends within their users. This is something that Google can do but not as fast as Facebook would be able to do due to them having direct access to what their users are discussing and “trending” about.

    In terms of the effectiveness of a search engine, Facebook could be comparable to Google if and only if its engine is as efficient as Google. This is pretty vital for them to be successful due to the following that Google already has over Facebook but as mentioned before, Facebook has such a massive amount of data that they could be more effective at find the right information for users. Facebook has the potential to massively increase their revenue from advertising, this is primarily because of how popular their website is and this is a huge potential to increase their advertising stream. If Facebook can nail down the development of a great search engine, they would become the most popular search website only because of the amount of traffic that they already have on their website.

    I do not think Facebook will be able to reach the success or popularity that Google has as a search engine. When people think of Facebook they think of the opinion of their friends, pictures of friends and a social site. Not everyone is fond of Facebook and the services that they offer and they choose to stay away from it and do not have Facebook accounts, people of all ages are torn on their feelings of Facebook. Since Facebook is not accessible to everyone, unless you have an account or know someone with an account, this majority of people will stick to using and supporting Google, a site that requires no personal ties to be used. Google is also well known to everyone and whenever there is an unknown question that is asked a common statement is “I’ll just Google it.” Google has been around and has become a trusted search engine for millions and I do not think that Facebook will be able to compete with their superior work ethic or the strong background. Google has worked hard to be the best and most used search engine, and I do not think that Facebook will ever become as well known or trusted by the entire population.

    Facebook is one of the largest interaction sites and it will be to the company’s advantage to develop a search engine in order to increase their market value, although it might be a tough task to overtake Google search engine, Facebook can actually compete with Google if the right search engine is developed. If Facebook develop a search engine; I believe that it will be fast growing and serve as a threat to competing search engines.Since Facebook is the fastest growing social network site which offers exciting things to do apart from chatting, it will be no coincidence if their search engine will be successful due to the huge data they already have at their base. for instance imagine a situation were you are planning to watch a movie and you seek others view on that movie, you tend post this on Facebook and wait to see the comment of the people on your friend lists rather than some rating of a complete stranger on Google, also rumors, news and events tend to travel faster and catch more attention on Facebook rather than Google, while most customers tend to get information and keep up about their favourite brand or product on Facebook.
    I feel if Facebook really are thinking about adopting a search engine, this will serve as a threat to other search engines and Google will be dumb to ignore them.
